Chapter Six

“I’m letting you back on the case, but only because we need all hands on deck. We have a situation here; Liam woke up. I need you to go to the hospital. I want the conversation recorded and I want the tape. No negotiation on this one.” That’s Ryan’s way of letting me back in, just like I knew he would, because he needed me on the case. A break in the weather for me.

I’d managed to trace the burner phone to a little mini-mart convenience store right underneath Melody’s apartment building in Riverview.

Technically there was enough information to pick Melody up for stalking, harassment, and the big one - intent to kill. What would be better however is to solve the actual case itself, which was; who rammed Liam’s car? Was it her? Was it my sister? Which one was it? A bunch of answers ran through my head, and I would need to put the puzzle pieces together in order to figure it out. First stop after my morning coffee, however, was the ICU to see what Liam had to say. After all, he was the man of the hour and should be able to shed some light on the situation.

I put my head back in the game and responded to Ryan. “I understand, thanks for letting me back on the case. I’m headed over there right now.” I grabbed my jacket off the back of the chair and scooted out the door. I didn’t want to waste time, so I rolled through the drive-thru, which was conveniently located around the corner from my house, for my coffee. Having that hot cup in my hands just made it easier for me to keep my clarity. As I navigated the traffic, I let my brain do its thing.

You have to keep the text messages to yourself for a little while. Just a little bit, Spencer. Just make sure you show Ryan when the time is right.

Downtown traffic wasn’t too bad, and I made it to the hospital in good time. As I entered, I went up to the main reception desk. I flashed my badge to the unimpressed lady behind it.

“Yes, can I help you with something?” she queried.

“I am here to see Liam Westwood. Can you please tell me what room he’s in?”

“You need to pass through the hall into the other section of the hospital, right over there and you’ll take the escalator down to ICU. See Josie, she’ll direct you to Liam’s room. He’s in Ward C, Room 321.” She pursed her lips as she looked me up and down. I was used to those nasty attitude looks from civilians, but my team and I would be the ones to solve this crime and prevent another person from being run off the road. That’s what she didn’t know.

I went through to the ICU to see a handsome man lying there with tubes stuck in his nose and one in his arm. His eyes were open.
